Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis - review of the literature seizing the oportunity of a case

2015
We present a new case of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis, review the literature and attempt to clarify the role of pharmaceutical and surgical treatment of the disease. It is a rare form of intestinal obstruction, first observed by Owtschinnikow in 1907[1–5]. The idiopathic form of the disease was later described by Foo et al. in 1978. We present the case of a 65-year-old female that was diagnosed as suffering from encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis after she was operated on for gastric cancer. The patient was successfully treated with tamoxifen, an outcome that concurs with the literature.
