The role of technical standards in healthcare education

2021
Abstract Technical standards in medical and healthcare education are usually developed and applied in order to systematically enhance continuous improvements of teaching/learning processes. In general, the actual use of these standards in practice ensures both interoperability and reusability of various educational objects and tools together. Moreover, standardization helps to avoid custom-made solutions and proprietary software products that are supposed to improve the quality of tertiary education. Technical recommendations and guidelines properly link up the medical informatics domain with good healthcare practices under the supervision of professional organizations and communities from around the world. This chapter introduces the usage of selected technical standards in medical education from three of today's most up-to-date and discussed perspectives: curriculum development and mapping, virtual patients and user behavior, and assessment of student learning.
