Vitamins and Allergic Asthma

2019
Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases worldwide. According to the World Health Organization’s estimation, more than 235 million people suffer from asthma. The interaction between genetic and environmental factors plays a critical role in the development of asthma. Treatment of asthma mainly relies on avoiding the triggers of asthma and use of a bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory medications. In recent years, the inclinations of the researchers and clinicians toward some vitamins that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions have been increased. They believe increasing the consumption of these kinds of vitamins may modulate the inflammatory process of asthma. According to this hypothesis, several studies were carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the vitaminssupplements for the management of asthma. Furthermore, several studies investigated the maternal intake of vitamins and the incidence of asthma in their offspring. Among the vitamins, vitamin C, E, and D were of interest in recent years. In this chapter, we reviewed the findings of studies and clarified the strength of the available evidence for recommendation of vitamin C, E, and D supplements of for management of asthma.
