Role of organic matter and the mineral part of peats in the sorption of radioactive cesium

1996
Sorption of radioactive cesium by peat soils is described by an exponential function (Freundlich isotherm). Organic matter plays a major role in the interaction of radioactive cesium and the soil adsorbing complex of these soils. Calcium and iron, which are in the mineral parts of peats, have a negative influence on 134 Cs sorption. Saturation of peats by monovalent cations strengthens the absorption of radioactive cesium by peat soils.
