Implementation ofaHigh-Rate USB Data Acquisition SystemforPET and SPECT Imaging*

2006
We madesubstantial progress withaflexible high- rateUSB dataacquisition systemdeveloped forgamma-ray imagingdetectors. Hardwareconsists of 16-channel data acquisition modulesinstalled onUSB carrier boards. One,two, andfour-module unitsweredeveloped. USB dataratewas increased toover30 MB/sanda 16-channel configuration achieved atrigger rateofover700kHz.Several high-resolution single-gamma detectors andtwohigh-rate PET detectors were instrumented. The detectors usevariousconfigurations of HamamatsuH8500,H9500,and Burle85002-800 PSPMTs. Systemchannels wereexpandedby synchronizing additional acquisition units. A Javaclient-server system wasdeveloped to linkacquisition computers overGigabit Ethernet. A Kmax tool wasdeveloped toprocess anddisplay images during acquisition. C andJavautilities weredeveloped toassist development and diagnostics. I.INTRODUCTION A newhigh-speed USB-based dataacquisition system was previously developed toinstrument thegamma-ray imaging detectors designed bytheJefferson LabDetector andImaging Group(1). Itwassuccessfully demonstrated onavariety of detectors andconfigurations. Scalability from16to128 channels wasachieved while preserving hightrigger rates. We successfully instrumented several low-rate high-resolution single-gamma detectors thatuseHamamatsuH8500and H9500position-sensiti ve
