Under the RADAR: Assessing and Intervening for Intimate Partner Violence

2013
Abstract Intimate partner violence (IPV), a major public health threat, affects millions of adult Americans each year, the majority of whom are women. This article describes a strategy to enhance advanced practice nurses' (APNs) understanding of IPV and to introduce RADAR, a clinician-focused strategy for IPV assessment and intervention, as part of routine care. Vignettes illustrating the use of RADAR by APNs in clinical settings are provided. While dealing with suspected or confirmed IPV is difficult for clinicians, introducing strategies, such as RADAR, into routine clinical practice can have dramatic and even life-saving effects.
