The past decade has witnessed enormous advances in molecular biology that, together with parallel developments in prenatal diagnostic technology, have enabled the introduction of screening programmes for a wide spectrum of genetic disorders. These are discussed in the context of: (1) population carrier testing for cystic fibrosis; (2) pregnancy screening for Down's syndrome, and (3) family screening for ovarian cancer
