A project to implement pasteurised human donor milk to supplement breastfeeding in the community

2017
This article will discuss a pilot project developed and implemented by the infant feeding team at Wirral Community NHS Trust. The results of the project will be described and implications for future practice explored. The project was devised to enable the team to offer donated pasteurised human milk as a supplementary feed in place of formula milk where faltering growth had been identified. The results of the study showed that all the participants benefited from extending the duration of breastfeeding and the majority were able to return to exclusive breastfeeding or continue breastfeeding with small amounts of supplementation.
