They were meant to be formative in nature, helping FYs to improve their clinical skills and knowledge through constructive feedback. The aim of this audit was to evaluate the standard of feedback received during SLEs by FYs at Lincoln County Hospital, UK. Methods : A survey questionnaire consisting of Likert-scaled response questions was designed and distributed among 39 FYs working across different specialties at Lincoln County Hospital during the month of September 2013. A total of 38 forms were completed and returned. The standard for good quality feedback used was adopted from the University of Edinburgh’s Feedback Standards & Guiding Principles document. Results : In terms of promptness 90% (34/38) had received verbal feedback within 1 hours’ time compared to previous audit in February 2013 (80% or 23/29). However, 52 %( 20/38) thought of them as a formative tool for learning where as previously 90% (26/29) thought of them as formative. 37% (14/38) reported never or rarely receiving any details on their SLEs compared to 22% (5/29) in the previous audit. Overall 36% (14/38) were satisfied with their SLEs compared to 55% (16/29) in the previous audit. Conclusions : SLE involves a constructive feedback on performance of doctors in their everyday activities for future improvements, though overall our audit has shown improvements in giving verbal feedback within 1 hours’ time; however improvements are needed in highlighting strengths, weaknesses and ways to improve through constructive feedback.
