Promoting Positive Perceptions of Jury Service: An Analysis of Juror Experiences, Opinions, and Recommendations for Courts

2013
Courts have long been interested in improving jurors' experiences. The current study adds to previous research findings by allowing jurors to respond to an open-ended question about their experiences. Analysis reveals several themes, including perceptions of jury service, judge, court staff, and courts; instruction comprehension; evaluations of evidence; court accommodations; time management; safety issues; concerns about deliberations or verdicts; stressors/hardships; and suggestions for improvements. Findings indicate that many of the innovations available to courts may be perceived positively by jurors if implemented. Further, court personnel should not underestimate the impact their behavior and the environment can have on jurors' perceptions. Courts should regularly investigate jurors' perceptions in their jurisdictions to determine what they can do to enhance jurors' experiences and encourage citizens to perform their civic duty.
