The relation between sleep quality and balance in students with sleep deprivation

2017
Introduction: Prevalence of sleep disorders is increasing in modern societies and is often associated with work strain and stress. Remarkably, sleep disorders affect the various parts of the nervous system function. So, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and balance in individuals suffering from sleep deprivation Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study, 52 students of Semnan Kowsar hospital night shift participated. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory, Y dynamic balance test and stork static balance test were used to collect data. Results: 40.4% of the participants had good sleep quality (scores 0-4) and 59.6% of them had poor sleep quality (5 or higher). There was no significant correlation between sleep quality and static and dynamic balance (P>0.05). Conclusion: Results showed that for young people with sleep deprivation, there is no significant relationship between balance ability and sleep quality. It seems that, since individual balance task without sensory challenges does not require attention and high levels of cognition, there is no significant relationship.
