A study on HIV/AIDS-related KABP among rural residents living with HIV and their migration

2004
Objective To understand HIV/AIDS related knowledge among rural residents living with HIV and their migration pattern. Methods An anonymous questionnaire was used to collect demographic information, migration, and HIV/AIDS related knowledge in rural married residents living with HIV aged from 16 to 49 years old in Fuyang prefecture, Anhui Province. Results Eighty four residents living with HIV were recruited, among which 45 2% had not migrated, 16 7% migrated to cities in Anhui Province and 38 1% migrated to other provinces. 28 6% respondents answer 65% items correctly in the questionnaire, and male, residents with middle school education level, afraid of AIDS and desired to learn AIDS related knowledge had higher correct rate. The awareness rate of HIV transmission routes was 45 2%, whereas only 13 1% for HIV non transmission routes. 85 7% never used condom last month, whereas 14 3% used condom sometimes last month, but only 2 4% had used condom consistently in last month. 3 6% stated had extramarital sex without condom in last 6 months. Conclusion It is necessary to implement HIV/AIDS health promotion program in rural areas because of the high mobility, lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS and less condom usage among rural residents living with HIV.
