Investigation of dynamic effects during cold upset-forging of Silicon Carbide particulate reinforced Aluminium metal matrix composite preforms

2018
Abstract The Aluminium based metal matrix composite with LM6 aluminium as base alloy and Silicon Carbide as reinforcement material was made by liquid stir casting process. The preforms of required dimensions were obtained by machining the cast specimen. Two separate cases of deformation, that is open die forging of solid disc and the solid rectangular preforms were considered in the present study. Both experimental and upper bound theoretical analysis were carried out taking into account the composite interfacial friction law, barrelling of preform vertical sides and the effect of die velocity on various deformation characteristics such as forging load, height reduction and energy dissipations. The results obtained are graphically presented and critically evaluated to assess the correlation between theoretical and experimental findings.
