Research on mechanical behavior of super-lightweight structure made of thin-walled spheres

Taking the ping-pong ball as the basic cell,the mechanical behavior of large deformation of three structures -compression of a single ping-pong ball between two parallel plates,compression of the ping-pong ball glued together with the parallel plates and compression of the ping-pong arrays glued together is studied.It is found that the first case gives a smooth stress-strain curve,the second one gives un-symmetric deformation if the glued size is only a bit different,and the third one gives basically a symmetric deformation of the neighboring balls.These findings are of guiding significance to the linking method and processing of the super-lightweight cellular structures made of hollow thin-walled spheres.
