RARE CASE OF OSTEOSARCOMA IN THE JAW AND ONCOLOGIC PRETREATMENT MANAGEMENT

2020
A 59-year-old female patient complained of a painless swelling in the mandible from the past 20 days. During the examination, an increase of volume in the half right mandible was noticed; in the intraoral examination a nodule with a smooth surface and a solid consistency was observed in the same region. Radiographic images depicted a poorly delimited mixed area of the region with a "sun ray" aspect. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the histopathologic examination revealed mesenchymal neoplasia with spindle cell proliferation and bulky ovoid permed by small outbreaks of organized osteoid compatible with osteosarcoma. Osteosarcoma is a malignant lesion of mesenchymal cells in gnathic bones and represents 6% to 8% of all lesions of this region. After the diagnosis, oncologic pretreatment and extraction of the condemned dental elements that had poor hygiene and periodontal impairment were performed, with the aim of avoiding infections during the oncologic treatment.
