Objective To explore the characteristics of hypertension in the elderly, and raise the awareness. Methods Patients with hypertension were recruited from the inpatient and outpatient unit from October 2007 to February 2009 in our hospital, which were divided into above or equal to 60-year-old group and below 60-year-old group. Results After comparison between two classifications, the grade 2 hypertension were the most. The grade 1 and 2 hypertension were the most in elderly group. According to the stratification of hypertension risk degree, high-risk group and very high-risk group of the elderly was significantly higher than that of the control groups(P< 0. 01 ). The prevalence rate of pure systolic hypertension was the highest about elderly group(56. 7% ). Significant differences existed between cardiovascular risk factors and depressive symptom score and target organ damage and combined diseases.
