Clinical characteristics of pseudocyst considered as simple bone cyst developing to involve the mandibular condyle with severe bony expansion: Report of a case and analysis of reported cases

2018
Abstract Simple bone cyst (SBC) rarely develops to involve the mandibular condyle and is occasionally discovered as an asymptomatic intraosseous lesion on routine radiographic examination. We describe here a case of SBC in which a lesion in the cheek of a 12-year-old girl had been growing over a period of years. We investigated the relationship between preoperative imaging and postoperative histopathological findings for SBC involving the mandibular condyle based on previous reports. Bony expansion and a well-defined margin appear to represent clinical features of SBC involving the mandibular condyle, with the higher frequency of bony expansion in the condyle potentially attributable to trauma and fibrous-osseous lesions, as well as the continuous stimulation accompanying jaw movement.
