Innovations in care: managing severely excoriated peristomal skin using a hairdryer

2014
This article aims to explore the management of severely excoriated peristomal skin. Using a case study from her own practice, the author will explore her experience of using a hairdryer as a tool in stoma care. When this practice was challenged, nursing literature was used to establish current practice and identify the risks. Following consultation, a guideline was developed to help reduce any risk to the patient. Stoma care nurses have developed innovative skills to solve the dilemma of leaking stoma pouches; similarly, the use of a hairdryer following strict guidance can be an effective method of drying severely excoriated peristomal skin and reducing the pain and anxiety felt by a patient.
