Dual port MIMO Half-Shaped Cubical Parasitic PIFA design for pattern and frequency reconfiguration applied in mobile terminals

2016
In this paper, a frequency and radiation pattern reconfigurable Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Half Shaped Cubical Parasitic Antenna (HSCPA) is presented. 3 Planar Inverted F Antenna (PIFA) elements were used to form the HSCPA. Schottky diodes were used to perform the frequency and radiation pattern reconfiguration. The proposed HSCPA design is very versatile as it can be used to achieve multiple frequency bands from 4 GHz to 14 GHz. The reflection coefficient achieved by all PIFA elements are less than −10 dB. High isolation between 2 HSCPAs reduces the mutual coupling to provide good correlation performance. Stable pattern reconfiguration at multiple frequency bands and lower Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC) of less than 0.1 were generated by the proposed antenna. These advantages become a promising solution to provide high data rate with reliable connectivity for future 5G mobile terminal application.
