Theconcentration oftheC-typelectin, mannan-binding protein, inhumanplasmaincreases during anacutephaseresponse

SUMMARY TwoELISAsforestimating mannan-binding protein (MBP)wereconstructed andtheconcentration ofMBP inplasma wasfollowed inpatients undergoing majorsurgery andinpatients having a malarial attack. Inbothcases increases ofMBP intheplasma wereobserved. Therelative increase andthekinetics varied fromperson toperson. Theconcentration ofMBP increased between 15-and three-fold following surgery. Insomepatients anincrease wasseenatday1whereas inothers the increase wasnotobserved until days3-9.Inthemalaria patients anincreased level ofMBP was maintained during 30daysoftreatment withchloroquine. Therelative increase inMBP was independent ofthepresurgery orpremalaria levels.
