MechanicalMaterialsandAerospaceDepartment(MMAE),4000,CentralFloridaBoulevard,Orlando,Fl32816,USARoom temperature sensing of hydrogen using randomly oriented tin oxide nanowires has beendemonstratedsuccessfully.Theroleofsurfacefunctionalizationofnanowireswithplatinumcatalystin rapid hydrogen detection is also studied. These nanowires were successfully incorporated intoamicro-electro-mechanical(MEMS)device.Thedevicecansuccessfullydetecthydrogengas(aslowas500ppm)withresponsetimeaslowas10sec.Effectofaspectratioofthenanowiresondiffusionofhydrogenmoleculesinthetinoxidenanowiresiselucidatedindetail.
