Role of metallothionein in the antioxidative damage of hippocampus in the senescence accelerated SAMP8 mice

2007
Objective To study the role of metallothionein(MT)in the antioxidative damage in hippocampus of SAMP8 mice. Methods In the experimental groups, the adult SAMP8 mice were injected MT of different types and concentrations into abdominal cavity continuously. In the control group,MT was replaced by saline. After 28 days, several parameters of oxidative-antioxidative system in hippocampus were measured. Results Compared with the control group, the MT3 of either middle or high concentration improved the SOD activity and decreased the MDA level(P<0.05).MT1 of middle concentration and MT3 of three kinds of concentration improved the GSH-Px activity inhippocampus(P<0.05),which was a powerful antioxidant.SOD and GSH-Px activity of MT3 group was higher than those of MT1 group with the same concentration(P<0.05).Conclusion MT can improve the antioxidative ability of SAMP8 mice in a concentration-dependent manner. With the same concentration, the antioxidative ability of MT3 is stronger than that of MT1.
