Influenza outbreak in a nursing home

1999
A resident of a nursing home has symptoms suggestive of influenza. In the last two days eight similar cases from the local community were identified, one of which was confirmed as influenza. The authors discuss the following aspects of this case: is it likely to be influenza; what is the likelihood that other residents will develop influenza; are the residents at risk of serious complications; should the residents be vaccinated at this stage; is there a place for antiviral therapy; should staff members be vaccinated?
