Fighting inequalities in AIDS treatment.

2002
This paper presents the views of Edwin Cameron a South African Appeals Court judge and person living with AIDS who is considered to be an icon of resistance to the South African governments eccentric HIV/AIDS policies. A long-time advocate for human rights and trade unions Judge Cameron’s profile was raised internationally during a speech at the International AIDS conference in Durban in July 2000 when he stated that South Africa’s growing AIDS epidemic is compounded by President Thabo Mbeki whose attitude he described as “irresponsibility that borders on criminality.” It is noted that Judge Cameron was moved to speak out on the issue of AIDS for the same reasons he was compelled to speak out against apartheid in the 1980s.
