Impact of Atrial Fibrillation on In-hospital Outcomes of Patients with Decompensated Heart Failure: Analysis of the Nis Database

2020
Background The morbidity and mortality associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) is a major public burden. These conditions often coexist and exacerbate each other. We aimed to investigate the impact of AF on in-hospital outcomes of patients admitted with HF exacerbation. Methods Using the National Inpatient Database (NIS) we identified patients 18 years and older admitted for HF exacerbation from 20120 to 2017. Baseline characteristics and in-hospital outcomes were recorded. Multivariate analysis model was used to adjust for statistically significant differences in baseline characteristics between the groups. Results A total of 153, 246 were identified, 53, 256 (35%) suffered from AF. Patients with AF were older (77 ± 0.49 vs. 69 ± 0.52, p Conclusions Despite a greater incidence of cardiogenic shock and longer length of hospital stay, the presence of AF was not associated with an increase in hospital all-cause mortality.
