Advanced grid operational tools based on state estimation

2021
Abstract With the integration of distributed energy resources and many other intelligent devices, there are increasing challenges in modeling, monitoring and protecting today’s power systems. The traditional state estimators need to be enhanced to deal with more complex situations and new developments are required to track system dynamic changes. In this chapter, a systematic framework for the detection, identification, and correction of power system model parameters is presented. A new monitoring tool based on dynamic state estimation is developed. In particular, a unified robust dynamic state estimation framework is proposed to monitor system real-time operating conditions while dealing with various data quality issues. Adaptive protection schemes based on dynamic state estimation are also developed, which can systematically examine the health condition of components of interest in real-time. Some tutorial examples are provided to demonstrate the benefits of new developments.
