CT Value in the Diagnosis of Space-occupying Lesions in the Right Lower Abdomen

2001
Objective To evaluate CT scanning in diagnosing space occupying lesions in the right lower abdomen.Materials and Methods CT scanning was performed in 54 patients with clinically suspected space-occupying lesions in the right lower abdomen. The diagnosis was confirmed by surgery or pathology in all cases except one with ileocecal tuberculosis. Results Of 54 cases, 38 were affected with malignant tumor, which presented as soft tissue mass, diffuse thickening of the intestinal wall, as well as pressure from external mass and pericolic infiltration, with homogeneous or inhomogeneous enhancement. The remaining 16 cases were found ill with benign lesions, mainly inflammatory disease, presenting as thickening of intestinal wall and circumferential fascia, and, occasionally, soft tissue mass with slight to moderate enhancement. Conclusion CT is of some value in the diagnosis and differentiation of space occupying lesions, malignant or benign, in the right lower abdomen.
