Intervertebral arthrodesis implants radial expansion and instruments for insertion

2002
An implant intervertebral arthrodesis (900) for implantation since, at least in part, an anterior approach, at least in part within and across the height of a disc space between two adjacent vertebral bodies of a spine of a person adult, said implant (900) comprising: a body having a front end (904) for insertion in the first into the disc space, a trailing end (902) disposed opposite said front end (904), a length between said forward (904) and rear (902) of said body, and a longitudinal axis, along the length of said body, said body having a base (905) proximate said forward end (904), a portion upper (910) adapted to contact one of the adjacent vertebral bodies, a lower portion opposite (910) to said upper portion adapted to contact one of the adjacent vertebral bodies, and at least one side (910) portion between said upper and lower portions, each extending said top portion, bottom and side from said base (905) of said body yy terminates proximate extensible end to said rear end (902) of said implant (900), each of said upper, lower and side portions spaced by the longitudinal axis to form a gap (903) interior and being spaced along a perimeter of said rear end (902 ) to form slots therebetween thereof, said implant (900) adapted to receive an implant driver (1100) configured for insertion into said hollow interior (903) proximate said rear end (902) and configured to attach to being least one of said slots to engage cooperably one or more of said proximal to said stretchable top, bottom and side portions (910), said inte rior (903) configured to contain therein at least part of the material to promote bone ingrowth, said upper and lower portions (910) configured to allow ingrowth of bone adjacent vertebral body with respect to the vertebral body being adjacent through said body of said implant being configured each of said upper, lower and side portions (910) to move, at least in part, in a direction away from the longitudinal axis allowing the expansion of the height and at least a portion of the width of said body, wherein said upper, lower and side portions (910) one collapsed position with respect to each other allowing a height and a width squashed of said body and an expanded with respect to the other enabling position a height and a width said expanded body, the height and width of said expanded body greater than the width l to height of said flattened body, respectively; and an expander (920) disposed at least partly within said hollow interior (903), said expander (920) configured to contact an instrument (1300) adapted to be insertardo through the rear end of said body to move while said expander (920) from a position close to said rear end (902) when said body is in the collapsed position away from said rear end (902) and toward said base (905) of said body for positioning said body in the expanded position, said expander (920) adapted to contact and move said top, bottom and side portions (910), and away from the median longitudinal axis of said body, said expander configured to expand the width of said body on the one hand being contacting only one of said side portions (910) of said body, said top, bottom and side portions (910) of said body being adapted to fit cooperatively with said expander (920) to position said expander (920) in a position along the length of said body between and away from each of said ends front (904) and rear (902) and to provide resistance to displacement of said expander (920) of said position when said implant (920) is in use, said expander (920) adapted to retain at least a portion of said bottom and side upper portions (910) to maintain the height and width expanded from said body and to resist the depression of said body with respect to the height and width of the flattened body when said body is in the expanded position.
