The value of MRI for the diagnosis and treatment of hemangiomas

2008
Objective To investigate the guidance value of MRI for the diagnosis and treatment of hemangiomas. Methods Fifteen patients with hemangiomas in the extremities were studied with Siemens 1.5 Tesla superconducting magnetic resonance imaging scanner.Vertical plane,T1-weighted and T2weighted coronal plane sequences, and then scare with Gd-DTPA enhancement were applied.Eight cases had additional CEMBI enhanced angiograph.Surgical intervention was done in 10 cases. The intraoperative findings were compared with preoperative MR[results.ResultsT1WI in all patients showed heterogeneous mixed signals dominated by low signal, with obscure boundary.T2WI also showed heterogeneous mixed signals dominated by high signal. After Gd-DTPA enhancement, tumor image was obviously enhanced. The relationship between the tumor and its surrounding tissue was clearly shown. The conglohated vascular malformation in the tumor tissue could be seen by CEMRI angiograph. The intraoperative findings of those 10 patients were exactly the same as the MRI images. Conclusion MRI is valuable in qualitative diagnosis and precise localization of hemangioma. It also provides important information for evaluating the scope of minor invasion and the prognosis of the surgery.
