What can we expect from the 1993 International Conference on AIDS [editorial]

1993
The 1992 International Conference on AIDS was described on the eve of its 8th occurrence as a forum in which to present discuss and examine new information experiences and ideas; helpful to participants in situating their work in the broad view of the pandemic; and fostering solidarity. Since the first such conference in 1985 in Atlanta Georgia the annual international symposia have integrated elements of prevailing political and social issues and become more high profile internationally while maintaining the requisite degree of medical and scientific integrity. These conferences influence the worlds view of the AIDS pandemic. Over 10000 people will attend the 9th International Conference on AIDS in Berlin Germany. The following should be expected: reports of progress but no new and important scientific data; more evidence attesting to the global spread of the pandemic; and affirmation of the waning global effort to fight HIV and AIDS. It is expected that conference participants and spokespeople will attempt to revitalize international efforts by proposing new approaches. The international conferences on AIDS combine enough unique elements to warrant major attendance by international participants from all over the globe. Attendees receive much more for their time effort and money than a summary document of conference abstracts which could be readily digested at home. Planners of other international meetings are encouraged to consider whether proposed conferences are equally based upon a clearly defined strategy and principles aimed at strengthening the work of those who attend and accelerating progress toward common goals before soliciting attendance.
