Detection and Measurement of Moving Targets Using X-band Digital Satellite TV Signals

This article proposes a new method for measuring the speed of water surface currents. It proposes a passive bi-static radar configuration using signals of opportunity, that is, signals transmitted by readily transmitting satellites. The Doppler frequency of the reflected signal is used to estimate the speed of the flow. The article presents also the first experimental results of a proof of concept experiment using this measurement method, showing its future potential for direct measurement sea-surface current in a cost-effective way.
