Role of Vitamin D & calcium in TMJ Disorder: A clinical Study

Abstract Aims & Objectives The aim is to study  Vitamin  D3 level  in patient with TMDs  and  to investigate the low levels  of Vitamin  D3 as one of  etiologic factor  in causation of TMDs. Materials & methods This study included 100 patients of TMDs, diagnosed on clinical signs & symptoms. The serum levels of Vitamin D3 were checked in all patients. In 100 patients low levels of Vitamin D were found & were taken in this study.  Patients were divided in two groups. In Group A (Study group) treated by Vitamin D3 oral supplements 1 sachet per week. In Group B (Control group) treated   by soft diet & jaw exercises for 6 months. Both groups   were evaluated   after 1 month, 3rd   and 6th   month after treatment. Results In this study females were more than males, age group ranged from 19 to 41 years. In all patients vitamin D3 levels were either deficient or insufficient. In 90 % patients with TMD sign and symptoms got relived after correction of deficient vitamin D3 levels. Conclusion The low level of Vitamin D3 should be investigated & corrected with supplements in management of TMD patients Key words:   Musculoskeletal disease, Calcium, vitamin D3, Temporomandibular joint disorder, articular pain
