University library provision of subject guides to the Internet

1996
The impetus for this paper was a review of a symposium on the role of librarians in the Information Superhighway and the ocnviction of the conference summariser that librarians will get to organise the Internet!. The focus of this paper is the building of subject guides to Internet resources, specifically by university libraries. There is some literature on the use of the Internet in reference work. Cataloguing Internet resources is being investigated by projects like Catriona. Librarians have a crucial task: to provide comprehensible and comprehensive guides to internet resources for their user communities. But should libraries create subject guides geared to their particular user needs, or merely refer their users to the general subject search resources on the Internet?
