Clinico-epidemiologic characteristics and patterns of care in Kaposi Sarcoma: Data from a single-institution series.

2018
e13585Background: HHV-8 is the etiologic agent forKaposi sarcoma (KS) and several other neoplasms. Clinicopathologic characteristics in KS patients at the time of diagnosis may differ based on T-cell CD4+ (CD4) counts. Methods: With IRB approval, we conducted a retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients with KS treated at our institution from 2007-2017. Clinico-epidemiologic data, therapy and information on clinical course were collected. Statistical analysis: Significance of associations was assessed via Fishers' exact test. Two-sample t-tests with homoscedastic variance were used to compare the CD4 counts and viral load in patients with mucosal versus skin-only involvement. Results: We identified 27 patients with KS (n = 27). The mean age at diagnosis was 48 years; 92% (25/27) patients were male; 84% (21/27) were HIV positive. 25.9% (7/27) patients had mucosal involvement. Patients with mucosal involvement had a mean CD4 count of 83 cells/mm3 (95% confidence interval [CI] 27-139) as opposed to 3...
