An Overview of the Internet of Medical Things and Its Modern Perspective

2021
Representing the connection between the physical world and the constant transmission of virtual data, the IoT allows all objects to be connected to each other over the internet. With the objective of providing personalized service, considering the technologies used to achieve these goals, they can take various forms. In that sense, applied this technological concept for medical devices, the technology is called the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). IoMT allows more refined monitoring of the patient in real time, and it is possible to issue alerts and inform health professionals more easily, even before the situation becomes more critical for the patient. Since this is one of the most positive points related to having the vital data of the patient in the beds in a centralized and updated way at every moment, it brings an enormous reduction potential of costs with adverse events. One of the greatest advantages of IoMT is access, by health professionals, concerning data consistent with the patient’s reality. However, the lack of information about the patient is a common and serious problem, among many other advantages. Even in full growth, the use of IoMT is still initial, evaluating the existence of a few devices connected in healthcare environments, monitoring patients. Still evaluating one of the main challenges is the insertion of means of connectivity in these environments. Therefore, this chapter aims to provide an updated overview of the IoMT, addressing its evolution and branch of application potential, showing and approaching its success relationship, with a concise bibliographic background, and synthesizing the potential of technology.
