Serodiagnosis of brucellosis in cattle and goats in organized farms of Karnataka

2014
Brucellosis is an endemic disease in many countries causing heavy economic losses in cattle and goats and is transmissible to man. The study aimed at screening for the presence of antibrucella antibodies in seven organized farms in Karnataka. Out of 156 cattle serum sample tested, nine samples (5.76%) were found positive by the RBPT and iELISA. Of nine RBPT positive samples, six were found positive by SAT with a titre of 1:40 and above. Of 115 goat serum sample tested, 12 (10.43%) were found positive by RBPT and 13 (11.30%) by iELISA. Eleven out of 12 RBPT positive samples found positive by SAT with a titre of 1:20 and above. Considering sensitivity and specificity it is suggested to use combination of all three tests in the diagnosis of brucellosis.
