Conversion of Bamboo Shoot Shell Biomass Into C6-Sugars by [C4mim]HSO4 Catalyzed Hydrolysis

2011
The C6-sugars from bamboo shoot shell biomass (BSSB) fraction are expected to be converted into 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (HMF), and subsequently to levulinic acid (LA). A kinetic study on one of the key steps of biomass to C6-sugars has been investigated. The experiments were performed in temperature (110-150°C), using [C4mim]HSO4 as the catalyzt (0.1-1.0 mol L-1) and a initial intake of 3% BSSB. A kinetic model of the reaction was developed for the kinetics of C6-sugars using a pseudohomogeneous, first-order kinetic model, which provided a satisfactory interpretation for the experimental results. The kinetic parameters for the model provided useful information for understanding the conversion mechanism of biomass into C6-sugars, HMF and LA.
