Mixed bacterial toxins in the treatment of tumors. I. Methods of preparation and effects on normal and sarcoma 37-bearing mice.

1958
Summary Toxins obtained from several strains of Streptococcus pyogenes and of Serratia marcescens were tested singly and in combination for their effect in causing regression of Sarcoma 37 in Swiss mice. It was found that the mode of growth, as well as the bacterial strain, plays a determinant role in the ensuing oncolytic potency. From the regression rates it is apparent that some of the mixed preparations are less toxic than, and superior in oncolytic effect to, those from Serratia marcescens alone or its purified polysaccharide. Possible mechanisms responsible for tumor destruction by the bacterial toxins are discussed.
