A study of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft

2000
Objective To determine the current incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG);analyze its clinical caracteristics and identify its clinical predictors. Methods One hundred and sixteen patients undergoing CABG without concurrent valvular surgery were involved. The preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative data were collected on standardized reporting forms. Results AF occurred in 33 patients (28 4%).The average age for patients with AF was (67 0±4 9) years as compared with (57 3±8 4) for patients without (P=0 001).Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the following independent predictors of postoperative AF:increasing age, dilating left atrium. Conclusions AF remains to be the most common complication after CABG.Age of the patient, the size of atrium are independent risk factors for the development of AF after CABG.
