Stabilisation Of Retaining Walls With Non-Grouted Soil Nails

2000
A new type of soil nailing, called sand anchors, has been developed to stabilise old retaining walls. Sand anchors bear without grout because of the constrained dilatancy of a dense granular material between anchor rod and borehole wall. They are environmentally friendly, can be used to preserve old monuments, provide additional drainage, allow immediate load application, are removable, and low cost. An example of stabilisation of an old retaining wall using sand anchors is presented, together with the results of pullout tests. In addition, some practical and design recommendations are given for applications of sand anchors in soils.
