Numerical Study of the Eddy Viscosity Turbulence Model for High Alpha Flow over the Low Aspect Ratio Wing

2012
The RANS CFD analysis using several turbulence models were performed to establish the high fidelity CFD tools at the high alpha and low speed flight condition on the SST configuration where the vertical flow dominates overall flow fields. The characteristics of the modified versions of the turbulence models (SA and Menter’s SST k-w models) were understood by comparing with the experimental results on a wing and fuselage configuration. The vortex behaviors that formed over the wing were strongly influenced by the turbulence models. The eddy viscosity production term in the rotation curvature correction was related with the vortex formation and transport. The CFD results show relatively good agreement with the experimental results when the strength of the eddy viscosity production was adjusted. However, the adjustment strongly depends on the flow conditions.
