Vancomycin-resistant enterococci. Is eating meat a risk? - Van­ comycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) may infect people by way of the food chain, particulary by eating contaminated meat. An investigation among inhabitants of two homes for the aged proved the presence of VRE in the faeces of six of the 62 meat eaters ( 10%; 95% confidence interval ( 95% Cl): 4-20) and in none of those of the 42 vegetarians (0%; 95% Cl: 0-8) (p < 0.05).
