DESIGN-CONSTRUCTION OF SORELL CAUSEWAY CHANNEL BRIDGE, HOBART. TASMANIA

2004
The first post-tensioned concrete bridge in Australia was the Sorell Causeway Channel Bridge in Hobart, Tasmania, constructed in 1957 in a maritime environment. The deterioration caused by the ingress of chlorides necessitated the demolition and replacement of the bridge in 2001. The successful use of a match-cast segmental channel-type road bridge for the design-construction of the new bridge is described in this paper. Also presented is background information on the channel bridge concept and lessons learned from the project. The paper highlights the advantages of the system to aid others adapt and further develop the concept.
