RATIONALE: The District Department of Health and the Colombian Association of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology undertook designed a study to know the prevalent mite species and density; including 124 gardens and 341 homes of children, and a total of 1023 samples dust in homes and 372 dust samples in gardens. METHODS: We collected a total of 1,697 samples of dust mats, floor and garden toys and dust samples in the mattress, pillows and floor of the child’s room. RESULTS: The density of mites in the roomwas variable from 0 to 24000 mites / g of powder, whereas in gardens was 0 to 15,000mites / g of powder. The species reported were Der pt (20.5%), Che (4.6%), L d (4.7%), B t (2.7%) and 5 species were not characterized. CONCLUSIONS: There worrying levels of mites in homes and kindergartens. The most prevalent species was Der pt, and G f. 4 species were found that were not reported as a risk factor for allergy.
