NOVEL FAST-ACTING SCINTILLATION DETECTORS FOR WIDE ENERGY RANGE APPLICATIONS

2006
Latest developments in complex structure oxide crystalline scintillating compounds are reported. Particularly, lead tungstate (PWO) crystal with increased light yield is described. Study of improved PWO with avalanche photodiode (APD) readout allows confidently predict its successful future application in wide energy range, starting from comparatively low energies through tens of GeV. Besides, APD applications in direct detection mode have demonstrated good energy resolution in 1-10 keV energy range. Our experience with yttrium aluminate crystal and prospects of its usage at high counting rates at photon energies up to 500 keV are discussed. Late developments of scintillators with heavy elements in a crystal matrix for application in ~1…10 MeV energy range are presented. Methods and equipment of a detector monitoring and stabilization for studies, where long- term stability is important, are also discussed.
