Effect of Pre-excavation Construction on Surrounding Historic Building Based on Field Measurements in Shanghai Soft Ground

2018
The settlement control of the building adjacent to excavation is always the important and critical issue in the excavation engineering, and the ratio of the settlement caused by the construction of pre-excavation can reach more than half of the total settlement of the excavation construction. This paper took an excavation engineering in Shanghai as an example, based on the monitoring data of the retaining structure construction stage, the effect of each stage, including bored piles construction, compaction grouting, soil treatment and diaphragm wall construction, on the historic building settlement adjacent to excavation was investigated, and some conclusions can be drawn: the construction of pre-excavation led to substantial settlement of the historic building that reached about 28 mm, and caused some cracks to exterior wall of the historic building; the settlement caused by the soil treatment and the diaphragm wall construction accounted for 30% to 50% and 40% to 60% of the total settlement in pre-excavation construction respectively. This project served as a special case study about the protection of adjacent historic building in group excavation which could also provide a reference for similar engineering in Shanghai.
