Tuning the strain rate sensitivity and ductility of Zr55Al10Cu30Ni5 metallic glass by He+ ion irradiation

2020
Abstract Although irradiation effect on the mechanical properties of metallic glasses has been demonstrated by extensive experimental and theoretical investigations, dynamics and rheology of MGs under ion irradiation is poorly known. Here we report the experimental characterization of the strain rate sensitivity of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 MG after He+ ion irradiation, and the isothermal relaxation spectra of anelastic deformation is introduced to reveal relaxation processes. Our results show that, the strain rate sensitivity and ductility of Zr55Al10Cu30Ni5 MG which is ascribed to harmonious cooperation of larger-defects and small-defects can be controlled by tuning concentration of larger-defects and small defects by He+ ion irradiation. This founding enlightens that tuning and balancing concentration of larger-defects and small-defects by ion irradiation is an effective way to improve the mechanical properties of MGs.
