Diagnosis of thoraco-abdominal disorders by ultrasonography in bovine

2016
The present study was conducted on 108 bovines (93 females, 15 males), aged 3 m to 15 yr. The animals had the history of fever, decreased milk yield, dullness, exercise intolerance, coughing, anorexia, recurrent bloat and constipation. On clinical examination dyspnoea, hurried respiration, brisket and submandibular oedema were noticed. All the animals were subjected for ultrasonographic examination with 3–5 MHz curvilinear ultrasonic transducer. Among 108 patients 25 animals did not show any abnormality, 58 animals showed reduced reticular motility due to different aliments viz., plastic indigestion (14), traumatic reticulo-peritonitis (6), reticular abscess (12), reticular adhesion (12), diaphragmatic hernia (4) and pericarditis (10). Ventricular mass in one animal, umbilical abscess in 10 animals, and ventral hernia in 14 animals were also diagnosed. Ultrasonography could be used in evaluating the motility of abdominal and thoracic organs.
