Endoscopic Balloon Dilation of Bilharzial Ureteric Strictures

1988
Fifty bilharzial ureteric strictures were dilated using balloon catheters, and patients were followed over 12 months. Thirty (60%) of the strictures were successfully dilated, and the ureters remained patent for more than 6 months. Twenty (40%) dilations failed, either immediately (5 patients) or within 3 (8 patients) or 6 months (7 patients). Success was judged by improved radiographic appearance of the stricture and improved renal function as judged by diuretic renogram. Endoscopic balloon dilation is a useful alternative treatment for bilharzial ureteric strictures.
