Random generation of convex aggregates for DEM study of particle shape effect

2021
Abstract In this study, the random generation of 3D convex aggregates is proposed for the numerical study of the particle shape effect in DEM simulation. First, the Bezier curve fitting technique is employed to construct a curve skeleton inside a randomly generated polyhedron. Then, a solid surface is generated based on the curve skeleton using the Gregory surface interpolation algorithm. Next, convex aggregates are created inside both regular and irregular polyhedrons to demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithm. Finally, DEM simulation of convex aggregates with different roundness features is performed to study the effect of roundness on the shear behavior of granular aggregates.
